Koreans and Americans often confuse each other in the way they speak. An
American asks a Korean a question and there is a pause before the Korean
responds. If the question is fairly direct, the pause may be even longer as the
Korean considers how to avoid a direct answer. The American, however, may
assume that the pause is because the question was not clearly understood and so
he may rephrase the question. It often happens that the American is himself just
uncomfortable and is trying to fill in with words to reduce his own uneasiness. In
any case, the additional verbalization is only likely to make the situation more
difficult for the Korean. Not only has the American asked two or more questions in
the space appropriate for one, but has separated himself by ___________________.
1. trying to avoid a direct answer
2. not trusting the immediate responds
3. poking into another's private affairs
4. forcing the Korean to hold his tongue
5. not sharing in a thoughtful silence
