I am writing anonymously as a concerned citizen in South Korea to ask your newsroom to look into a serious election-administration controversy that took place during South Korea’s June 3 local elections.
What began as ballot-paper shortages at multiple polling stations quickly grew into a much larger issue: voters waiting for hours, voting being suspended or extended, questions over whether all voters were able to cast their ballots under equal conditions, and concerns over how additional ballot papers were printed, supplied, and handled. The situation later escalated further. Ballot boxes were forcibly removed, citizens were dispersed by police, several injuries were reported, a previously uncounted ballot box was later found in Seoul, and large crowds gathered outside the vote-counting center calling for election re-run.
Despite the seriousness of these events, the issue has not received adequate or sustained coverage in South Korea. Much of the domestic reporting has been limited, fragmented, or framed mainly as a partisan protest, rather than as a broader issue involving voting rights and election administration.
I am attaching an evidence-based briefing document prepared for foreign media. It includes a chronological timeline, source-tagged evidence, field images, public data, and a full appendix of linked sources. Each claim is tied to official materials, news reports, field footage, or analysis so that the matter can be independently checked.
I respectfully ask your newsroom to review the attached briefing and consider covering this issue — whether as a news article, an investigation, or an explanatory piece on South Korea’s election-administration crisis.
I am not submitting this as proof that election fraud occurred. Rather, I am asking for serious journalistic attention to a documented failure in election administration and the unresolved questions that followed.
Please let me know if you would like additional materials, selected field images, video links, or a shorter executive summary.
Sincerely,
A concerned citizen in South Korea
