South Korea Rolls Out 5G Smartphone Networks
 
You've been hearing about 5G for years. About how it's going to be more than 10 times faster than 4G, how you'll be able to download an HD movie in a matter of seconds. For South Korea, it's here.

Samsung is launching its Galaxy S10 phone Friday, and it's the first handset here to be 5G compatible. A coup for the Korean tech company and also a useful litmus test for companies around the world to see how many consumers actually sign up.

The largest telecom operator in South Korea SK Telecom launched its plan this week saying they're aiming for 1 million subscribers by the end of this year. 85 cities are covered so far with customers paying between $70 and $115 a month for the updated service. SK Telecom insists we should believe the hype.

SK Telecom and rival, KT are highlighting what 5G can mean to V.R. Virtual Reality and A.R., Augmented Reality. Sitting with your friends at a baseball match without actually going to the match, or even being in the same city as your friends.

The smallest provider here, LG Uplus has 18,000 5G units across the country. They're the only ones using technology from Chinese telecom giant Huawei, who's currently locked in legal battles with the United States.

The Trump administration has been pushing allies to remove Huawei technology from their networks, claiming the company is too close to the Chinese government. South Korea may be the first, but it's also somewhat of a guinea pig. Many countries around the world will be watching this rollout very carefully to see how many customers actually sign up.

대한민국의 최대 통신 회사인 SK 텔레콤은 이번 주에 올해 말까지 1백만 가입자를 목표로 하는 계획에 착수했습니다. 지금까지 85개의 도시에서 사용이 가능한데, 월 70~115달러의 요금을 낸 고객들은 업데이트된 서비스를 받을 수 있습니다. SK 텔레콤은 광고 내용을 믿어야 한다고 주장합니다.


SK 텔레콤과 경쟁업체인 KT는 5G가 VR(가상현실)과 AR(증강현실)에 어떤 의미인지를 부각시키고 있습니다. 경기장에 실제로 가지 않고도 친구들과 같이 야구 경기장에 앉아 있을 수 있으며, 친구들과 (가상현실에서 만들어진) 같은 도시에 있을 수도 있습니다.

이곳에서 가장 규모가 작은 제공업체인 LG 유플러스는 전국적으로 1만 8천 개의 5G 기지국을 보유하고 있습니다. 그들은 유일하게 중국의 통신 거대기업인 화웨이의 기술을 이용하는데, 화웨이는 현재 미국과 법적 분쟁에 휘말려 있습니다.

트럼프 행정부는 동맹국들에게 화웨이 기술을 그들의 네트워크에서 배제하라고 압력을 넣어왔는데, 이 회사가 중국 정부와 너무 가깝다고 주장하고 있습니다.

대한민국이 최초가 될 지도 모르지만, 또한 일종의 실험 대상이 되는 셈입니다. 전세계의 많은 나라들이 이번 출시를 통해 얼마나 많은 고객들이 실제로 가입을 할 지에 대해 아주 주의 깊게 살펴볼 것입니다.
