이탈리아 밀라노에 본사를 둔 해킹 전문회사 '해킹팀'이 있는데, (말그대로 Hacking Team이다. 사용프로그램은 RCS) 다른 해커들이 이 해킹팀의 서버 내부자료를 해킹하여 인터넷에 공개했다. 그런데 이 과정 중에 해킹 전문회사의 고객 중에서 대한민국 국가정보원이 있음이 밝혀져 일어난 논란이다. 해킹을 통한 감시대상이 누구였는지 등은 정확히 밝혀지지 않았으나, 대한민국 국민을 대상으로 한 것으로 보이며, 대한민국 국회에서 조사가 시작되었다.

- 중개회사인 나나테크는 다양한 곳에 통신장비를 납품하는 회사다. 통신망 차원에서 정보를 가로챘을 수도 있다는 것이다.

한 국가정보원 직원(임 모 씨 45세)이 해킹관련하여 유서를 남긴 채 용인시 이동면 화산리의 한 야산에서 자살한 상태로 발견되였다. 그는 3장의 유서를 남겼으며, 국정원 해킹 관련 내용을 유서에 남겼다는 기사가 속보로 나왔고 유족이 유서의 내용 공개를 반대한다고 경찰이 밝혔다. 관련기사 그런데 조선일보에서 유서 3장중 한장의 내용 중 일부를 관계자를 통해 공개했다. 관련기사임 씨의 가족들은 출근한 지 5시간이 지난 이날 오전 10시쯤 관할 소방서에 “임 씨가 오전 5시쯤 밖으로 나간 뒤 연락이 되지 않는다”고 신고했다. 소방서는 위치 추적을 통해 수색을 벌이던 중 2시간 만인 낮 12시에 숨진 임 씨를 발견하고 경찰에 신고했다.
